本作品は、宇宙をテーマとしたグループ展「境界を食む」のために制作した作品です。
作品名「Apocalyptic Sound」が示すように、オカルトやインターネット上でたびたび語られる、終末の訪れを知らせるけたたましい音や恐ろしい音をモチーフとしています。
複数のラッパのような形状や、空気を通す管を持ち、一見すると鳥のようにも見える姿をしています。しかし、手や足にあたる部分には自然的な要素が取り入れられており、自然物なのか機械なのか、あるいは生物なのか、明確には捉えきれない存在として造形しています。
「話が通じるのか、通じないのか」「これは一体どのような生物なのか」と、見る人に語りかけてくるような、正体が掴めない存在を作りたいという思いから制作しました。
また、鳥のような自然的な姿と機械的な構造を組み合わせることで、自然と人工物、生物と機械といった相反する要素が混在する不気味さを表現しています。
私は以前から、流木を使って作品を制作してみたいという思いがありました。本作品では、その自然に生まれた形をどのように造形の中へ取り入れ、人工的に作った形と自然に生まれた形を違和感なく融合させられるのかという実験的な試みを行いました。

Apocalyptic Sound
This work was created for the group exhibition “Borderline”, an exhibition centered around the theme of space.
As suggested by the title “Apocalyptic Sound,” this work is inspired by the loud and terrifying sounds that are often associated with the coming of the apocalypse in occult stories and on the internet.
The figure has multiple trumpet-like shapes and tubes that appear to carry air, giving it a bird-like appearance at first glance. However, natural elements are incorporated into the parts that resemble its hands and feet. As a result, it is difficult to determine exactly what this being is—whether it is a natural object, a machine, or a living creature.
I created this work with the desire to depict an enigmatic being that seems to communicate with the viewer, leaving them wondering, “Can I understand what it is saying, or can I not?” and “What kind of creature is this?”
By combining its bird-like, organic appearance with mechanical structures, I wanted to create an unsettling presence in which contrasting elements—nature and artificial objects, living creatures and machines—exist together.
I had wanted to create a work using driftwood for some time. With this piece, I experimented with how to incorporate the naturally formed shapes of driftwood into my sculptural process, and how to seamlessly combine those naturally occurring forms with shapes created artificially by hand.
